A commissioner cannot earn points for attending fire district meetings. This is because activities of the volunteer fire company/department are eligible for points. The same would go for the chief attending the monthly district meeting. The points for attending district meetings should be baked into the officer points that are awarded to the chief.

Yesterday we discussed how to determine if you should categorize department responses into fire or ambulance. The next question is, how do you determine if the call is an ambulance call or a fire call? There is no 100% correct answer – it is a case-by-case basis that must be determined locally. If the determining…

In the New York State LOSAP Point System, the department responses category stipulates that calls should be broken into two categories – emergency rescue and first aid squad (ambulance) calls and “all other” calls. A question was raised about if calls be split into the categories, and if so, how. In this post, we’ll handle…

A question was raised today about the 50-point threshold here in NY State, and if a sponsor can require more than 50 points to earn service credit and a service award benefit. To a lot of you, this may sound obvious and not new information. However, we have run across several situations here in NY State where the LOSAP points were being tracked based on another period and not a calendar year. I’ve run into it before in Villages, which typically run on a 6/1 to 5/31…

An interesting question was posed to me today – can a volunteer who participates in a one-person drill be awarded a point under the drill category? My initial reaction was no – there is no such thing as a one-person drill. But then I stopped to think about it. Article 11-A doesn’t define a drill.…
