A question was raised about points for meetings. Here is the applicable section of the statute:
(v)Attendance at meetings—twenty points maximum.
Attendance at any official meetings of the volunteer fire company—one point per meeting.
The Office of the State Comptroller has issued two legal opinions about this point system category. Comptroller Opinion 94-25 states that points cannot be awarded under the meeting category for “meetings” of an emergency rescue and first aid squad, fire police squad, or the executive board of a fire company.
Further, Opinion 95-9 states hat points cannot be awarded in the meeting category for committee meetings.
In both cases, these meetings could likely be considered miscellaneous activities.
Therefore, only meetings of the entire membership of the fire company (or fire department) should be considered a “meeting” for the purposes of the meeting point system category.
